Abstract

The changes in the way we communicate in the age of social informatization have affected the way we live, work, and, consequently, the ways in which we learn. In order to match the ways that learning has changed, policies and action plans have been proposed and implemented in many countries and regions. In the released policies and major projects, we could see the underlying clue and trends for the development of university courses. By reviewing the history of university open courses, three stages of open course development were identified in this chapter. The major projects in each stage were introduced and analyzed for its strength and weakness; especially the experience on open courses from mainland China was analyzed from its background, implementation, and impacts. In the conclusion, from an effective learning perspective, a framework for speculating open course was proposed and the strategies for the development of university courses was analyzed based on the framework.
