Abstract
Today’s technologies allow us to reconsider how we see and experience reality. Through the development of an interactive and immersive Augmented Reality (AR) application created alongside a physical installation, this paper investigates how AR can provide layers of information that support physical exhibitions while also taking the knowledge produced for the exhibition outside of the contexts and boundaries of the gallery. It highlights the immersive qualities emerging through extended-reality technologies and the ‘phygital future’ we are now beginning to see in the space of exhibitions. Architectural exhibitions are a mode of disseminating information produced by practitioners and academics about innovative methodologies in research and practice. However, traditionally, this information has been bound to the physical exhibition space, only providing access to those able to visit the site. AR allows for the dissolution of this physical boundary, therefore serving a dual role. On one hand, it can enhance the on-site experience, adding new digital layers of information that would not be possible to include otherwise and providing a more immersive knowledge experience that can be more easily understood and remembered. On the other hand, it can be experienced off-site widening access to and dissemination of valuable learnings. This was created through a participatory design methodology, assembled with AR guidance, and experienced on-site over several weeks.
