Abstract

Peru is in third place in Latin America related to the extension of drylands. During 12 years (2003 to 2014), 613 drought emergencies were registered with a negative impact of 92% during the vegetative phase of crops (growth, flowering, and maturation). On a national level, 127 events were registered on the Pacific slope, 25 on the Titicaca slope, and 11 on the Atlantic slope between 2000 and 2010. The study area includes the coast and central highlands within Latitude 10° 30″ to 16° 30″ and longitude 77° 15″ to 73° 15″. In this research, the Kogan method is proposed, where the Vegetation Health Index (VHI) is estimated and analyzed between the years 2010 to 2019. The results showed that VHI identified the average occurrence of agricultural droughts with moderate, severe, and extreme severity between 2758 m, 2583 m, and 2530 m of altitude, respectively.
