Abstract

Our study aims to determine the water quality of the dams and the environmental factors that may affect the composition and distribution of some rotifers living in 28 Algerian dams. To this purpose, in each reservoir, four seasonal samplings were conducted during the year 2014–2015. Plankton samples were collected using a 50 μm mesh net and fixed in a 5% formalin solution. Water samples were analyzed in the laboratory to determine nitrate, nitrite, and phosphorus concentrations. In addition, temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), electrical conductivity, salinity, and pH were measured in situ using a multi-parameter (Multi-340i/ SET WTW), while transparency was determined using a Secchi disk. Our results revealed that the species Polyarthra remata Skorikov, 1896, was found in 24 sites and therefore had a wide distribution. The latter is followed by Keratella cochlearis cochlearis (Gosse, 1851) and Keratella quadrata quadrata O.F. Muller, 1786, which occur in 21 dams. However, Filinia terminalis (Plate, 1886) appears to be the rarest species, as it was found in only 50% of the sampled sites. Moreover, it should be noted that from the point of view of dominance, Keratella tecta (Gosse, 1851) occupies the first place (34.78%), followed by P. remata (19.38%), and the last rank is attributed to Asplanchna priodonta Gosse, 1850 which constitutes 1.91% of the specific richness. Finally, our results show that environmental factors play a crucial role in the distribution of zooplankton communities in our dams.
