Effect of Silvopastoral Systems on Biodiversity and the Provision of Environmental Services in Tropical Agro-Landscapes

Silvopastoral systems of Meso America and Northern South America

Abstract

A number of studies have highlighted the potential of silvopastoral systems as conservation tools in highly intervened agricultural landscapes in the tropics. However, to date there has not been a synthesis of the scientific evidence on the effects of different types of silvopastoral systems on biodiversity and the supply of ecosystem services. This chapter aims to synthesize the scientific information on biodiversity and ecosystem services associated with some of the most widely used silvopastoral arrangements in tropical landscapes. From this synthesis, the mechanisms by which silvopastoral systems affect biodiversity are discussed and areas requiring further research are identified.
