Abstract

Past studies indicated that young individuals who are in the juvenile justice system experience significantly greater levels of depression during their adolescence and early adulthood. In addition, it was found in the previous chapter that depression emerged as the focal point among various emotional and behavioural problems. This heightened depression and the associated problems pose challenges to their successful rehabilitation. As a result, depression is suggested to be considered as an alternative metric to determine the outcomes of the rehabilitation and reintegration efforts. In this chapter, we delve into an extensive examination of the prevalence rate of depression, how it changes once youths enter the justice system, and the factors that either increase the risk or provide protection against depression in this context.
