Abstract
This chapter introduces the methodology of the Enhancing Positive outcomes for Youth and the Community (EPYC) study. The EPYC study is a pioneering longitudinal study in Asia that focuses on crime prevention, rehabilitation, and reintegration of young offenders in Singapore. Two samples of these youths were used in this book. The baseline offender sample consisted of 1,224 youths, while the longitudinal offender sample consisted of 835 youths interviewed yearly over 3 years. Apart from demographic variables, we measured participants’ emotional and behavioural problems (EBPs), personality, adverse childhood experiences, re-offending risk, 2-year re-offending, drug use, protective assets, family functioning, and attachment to parents. Additional details on the study aims, sample, data collection procedures, measured variables, and analytical plan can be found in this chapter. Reading this chapter facilitates the understanding of research findings in later chapters.
