Abstract

Otitis media is a multifaceted entity, why a single vaccination against otitis media is not possible. Vaccination against pneumococci and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) has, however, changed the epidemiology of acute otitis media (AOM) in children. The effect on serous otitis media (SOM) has been less pronounced. Viral vaccinations might also affect the epidemiology of otitis media. This is both by preventing otitis media caused by the virus but also and perhaps more importantly by preventing the facilitating of bacterial infections during viral upper airway infections.
