Abstract

Nowadays the multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW method) is widely used to estimate the velocities of shear waves in the shallow subsurface during engineering geophysical studies. The practical implementation of MASW, as a rule, is based on working with flank observation systems. At the same time, when conducting seismic surveys at water areas using bottom recorders or bottom stations (both in the framework of solving oil and gas as well as engineering problems), it becomes possible to analyze surface waves arriving at receivers from different sides of the source, thereby the area under study is repeatedly illuminated at different angles. Thus it is possible to perform surface wave tomography instead of MASW method. This approach is widely used in seismology but not so in seismic exploration, though it has certain advantages. In the current work we show the processing of seismic data recorded by bottom stations at the water area of the Gulf of Ob. The obtained results are compared with the results of MASW method. The advantages and disadvantages of application of surface wave tomography are demonstrated and methodological recommendations are given for engineering geophysical studies at water areas.
