Tree Balance Indices

Abstract

In the original publication by Furnas [52], the Furnas rank (also sometimes referred to as Furnas’ R statistic) was introduced as a tool for sampling trees uniformly from the set of rooted binary unlabeled trees with a certain leaf number. Kirkpatrick and Slatkin [84] later suggested the Furnas rank as a measure of balance for rooted binary trees.
