Experimental Vibration Analysis for Civil Engineering Structures (EVACES 2023)

Abstract

Gradual deterioration of structures increases the need for the development of damage detection methods. One kind of them, vibration-based damage detection methods, are dependent on a precise system identification. Since modal parameters are affected by environmental changes (e.g., temperature changes), possible structural damage can be masked. Thus, damage detection methods may be unreliable. Therefore, compensation of the temperature changes presents a challenging step. Hence, this paper is devoted to operational modal analysis of a steel truss bridge model in a laboratory under varying environmental conditions - changing temperature. During the measurements, temperatures and accelerations are simultaneously recorded. Then, stochastic subspace identification is used to perform operational modal analysis. The effect of temperature on identified natural frequencies should be accounted for and compensated for. This should allow for reliable consecutive damage detection. Drawbacks as well as benefits are discussed. In addition to that, the possible impact of the temperature change is investigated using modal assurance criterion.
