Abstract
This chapter builds upon the previous chapter by providing an understanding of methodological approaches used to examine research questions for exploring educational problems within the health profession. As such, the three research paradigms, quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods research, are explored. First, an introduction provides a broad overview of the characteristics for each research paradigm. The three research paradigms are then discussed with respect to the philosophical underpinnings, study designs and types, data collection, and data analysis. Examples throughout this chapter aim to provide clarity on the use of these approaches for the variety of research studies that examine educational problems within the health profession. As such, the concepts are applied to basic, applied, evaluation, and action research to name a few. In sum, the ideas presented in this chapter aim to provide a foundational understanding of definitions and applications of research methods to answer a variety of research questions for educational researchers within the health field.
