Abstract
Skull base surgery is one of the most challenging fields in neurosurgery. Space for the approach is limited, lesions are deep sited, and there is a dense network of eloquent structures such as the cranial nerves and brain stem. The combination of limited space for the approach and delicate sensitive structures within or closely adjacent to the lesion creates a challenging surgical situation, which is frequently the focus of research and development.
Robotic and robot-assisted endoscopic surgery has technological advantages such as high accuracy and reproducibility, brilliant illumination and high magnification, so it can offer valuable support in addressing these deeply located surgical target areas. The present chapter will discuss the possibilities of robotics in lateral skull base approaches.
