Abstract
The authors argue that promoting sport is a necessary component of a good life. A ‘human right’ is a justified claim or entitlement that belongs to every person, from birth until death, and which should be protected and respected by all persons. When discussing human rights we feel that it is important to take an interdisciplinary approach to the topic. This is especially true in regards to sports, which allow human beings to excel, and which almost all human beings wish to participate in. The authors demonstrate that there are still many elements which prevent countless individuals from participating in sports. These include racism, sexism, economic inequities, and anti-immigration bigotry. But why would anyone be surprised that these elements exist in sport when they exist in society overall as well? Studying the negative (as well as the positive) aspects of sport helps us to understand why these behaviors exist in society’s other social institutions. Advocating sport as a basic human right highlights how these negative elements must be addressed in order for humans to flourish.
