Abstract

In this interview with Roman Yos we aim to discuss the organization and research of Jürgen Habermas’s archive, located at the Archive Center (Archivzentrum) at the library of the Goethe University Frankfurt am Main. Habermas’s writings were well received and widely discussed in both philosophical and scientific communities, but also in theoretical and political contexts. Therefore, the investigation of letters and documents that constitute the archives, which date from 1950 to 1994, can add to a more complex approach to Habermas’s output and its deployments, especially on the subject of the public sphere. This conversation with Yos is intended to elucidate the possible unique contributions that the archive presents for Habermasian studies, considering the developments already published in his book, Der junge Habermas (2019).

Notes

  1. 1.

Between 2013 and 2021, there have been approximately 80 inquiries from users who have used the papers or directed questions about them to the Archive Center. I owe this information to Oliver Kleppel and Dr. Mathias Jehn, who are responsible for the archive holdings on site.

In addition, specific terms of use must be observed. See therefore https://landesarchiv.hessen.de/hessisches-archivgesetz.

  4. 4.

Regina Becker-Schmidt, who herself could be seen as a good example, has written about some women at the IfS (Becker-Schmidt 2009).

  6. 6.

For example: One single letter that stands out from other correspondence is from the former secretary for foreign affairs Hans-Dietrich Genscher. It was recently published in the 2021 issue XV/3 (p: 39) of Zeitschrift für Ideengeschichte that was dedicated to Habermas.

See, for example, his new publication on digital transformation (Habermas 2022).

  8. 8.

Jürgen Habermas has been regularly writing in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung since 1952.
