Abstract
Implanted cardiac devices are very sophisticated. The most common devices are pacemakers and defibrillators which can function autonomously to both deliver therapy and obtain diagnostic data. A pacemaker can determine if an intrinsic rhythm is present, and it will follow an algorithm to deliver a pacing impulse if needed or inhibit and monitor if an intrinsic impulse is observed. Symptomatic bradycardia is the main reason to implant a pacemaker. Internal cardioverter defibrillators (ICD) are utilized to intervene upon life-threatening arrhythmias. They can be implanted if a sudden death episode has already occurred (secondary prevention) or to reduce the risk of an initial life-threatening arrhythmia event (primary prevention). Interrogation of these devices gathers important clinical information about the device and patient that can be utilized to optimize their care. This section will serve to review the basics of both permanent and temporary pacemakers, indications for pacemakers, interpretation of device interrogations, and troubleshooting.
