The Worldwide Face of Elder Abuse

Abstract

Unfortunately, the family abandonment of Fatima is a case far too familiar, and it represents only one type of elder abuse that exists around the world. Across all its insidious types, the prevalence of elder abuse is far greater than most people think—the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that one in six people 60 years of age and older were abused in community settings in the past year (Yon et al., The Lancet Global Health 5:e147–e156, 2017).
