Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of foreign/second language learning and teaching research and innovation in the Southern Caribbean region. A brief review of available literature on foreign/second language learning and teaching research in the region unveils the scarcity of studies in the area and the need to encourage language teachers to engage in more research and innovation to promote foreign/second language learning. As part of the Innovation in Language Learning and Teaching series, the authors discuss innovation from a sociocultural perspective in an effort to do justice to the pedagogical innovations presented in each of the chapters. More specifically, they look at the sociocultural notion of agency to fairly assess each of the innovations in this volume understanding that all stakeholders —teacher-researchers, learners, and administrators— are situated in environments that can be conducive to certain pedagogical practices or can pose limitations for the success of the attempted innovations.
