Abstract
Standards can be very useful to evaluate the load sharing factor in gearboxes, but more refined analyses are needed when pushing the limits of a transmission. In this paper, the procedure according to ISO standard is compared to more accurate and complete analysis methods. The approach according to the standard is first briefly described along with the one implemented in an advanced commercial software. Then a transmission ratio and shaft distance are predefined and several possible combinations of tooth number and normal module that satisfy the infinite life requirement for both pitting and bending fatigue are studied with different approaches to highlight the benefits and limits of each one. Several results are shown which can be useful to determine the more appropriate solution, such as the static transmission error and the pressure distribution on the flanks obtained with a non-linear and non-Hertzian model. Also, the effective tooth root stresses computed with a detailed finite element model are shown and some considerations are clarified and finally conclusions are drawn showing how it is possible to increase the power density.
