Stories from ICU Doctors

Abstract

This chapter explores specific professional responses to stressful events in greater depth. The value of active reflection on the factors potentially leading to difficult situations or poor outcomes is emphasised as a primary means of processing the event. The degree to which the intensivist was able to “predict” the outcome also plays an important role, as this directly impacts the intensivist’s ability to emotionally prepare. Finally, the role of institutionally situated quality of care processes in this response is discussed, as well as the utility of counselling and ongoing programmes of self-care.

Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it.
