Abstract

Reactive aggression is a distinct form of aggressive behavior which is characterized by emotionally driven, impulsive, and defensive actions, which typically manifest in response to actual or perceived threats. This chapter describes the characteristics and mechanisms of reactive aggression and then describes the development the Mindful Coping Power program for children with high reactive aggression and their parents. Mindful Coping Power is a mindfulness-enhanced version of the evidence-based Coping Power program, designed to strengthen program effects on reactive aggression. The theoretical basis for Mindful Coping Power, key components of the child and parent curricula, and preliminary outcomes are described, as well as future directions for research in this area.
