Abstract
Surgical procedures cause pain. Effective and compassionate surgery should minimize or eliminate pain, hence the necessity for anesthesia with surgery. The scope of surgery determines the type of anesthesia. General anesthetics (intravenous (IV) or by inhalation) are systemic and impair consciousness. Local anesthetics (amides, esters) affect restricted areas. This chapter focuses on the different types of regional anesthesia, local anesthetics, pharmacokinetics, dosing, types of blocks, toxicity, and treatment in cases of overdose.
