Abstract
Respiratory failure (RF) is defined as a disturbance in oxygenation, ventilation, or both and is associated with an arterial oxygen saturation less than 90%. Lung and airway disease and neuromuscular disorders precipitate RF in children. In the treatment of children with RF, noninvasive ventilation (NIV) is a viable option to avoid the potential negative effects of invasive ventilation. In this chapter, NIV use in children with hypoxemic RF will be discussed.
