Abstract
Bariatric surgery can greatly alter the function of the gastrointestinal tract. These alterations can influence both intake and output. This chapter focuses on the output following bariatric surgery, specifically diarrhea. The authors focus more specifically on diarrhea that occurs following the duodenal switch. Diarrhea after the duodenal switch is uncommon but does occur. It is typically self-limited and managed by nutritional alterations in the patients’ diet. However, for a subset of patients, it can become a debilitating problem. We do an in-depth and thorough literature review of both the medical and surgical treatments for refractory diarrhea in duodenal switch patients. We present the efficacy of different treatments, both medical and surgical as found in the literature. In addition an algorithm is provided for treatment progression in those patients in whom medical therapy does not work and require surgical revision.
