Abstract
This chapter provides an overview of the prevalence of data reported on the mental health and well-being of LGBTIQA+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Gender Diverse, Intersex, Queer, Asexual, Plus other gender identities and sexual orientations) people using Australia as a case study while also comparing it to other Western nations. This data notes an overwhelming prevalence of experiences of distress and poor mental health among this demographic group across the globe. The chapter explores social science concepts including stigma, oppression, and discrimination, and evolving understandings of sex, sexuality, and gender to better understand how mental health concerns and resilience emerge in the LGBTIQA+ landscape. Key themes that emerge in LGBTIQA+ mental health research are described, including a commentary on common research designs, findings, and methodological benefits and shortcomings. Finally, it discusses how research in the last decade has helped shape mental health policy, health promotion campaigns, and community outreach discourses for this diverse population group, specifically focusing on Australia. A case study from the perspective of a clinical psychologist practitioner specializing in LGBTIQA+ health is used to highlight the utility of social science concepts in clinical practice. In doing so, this chapter demonstrates the important relationship between the social and psychological dimensions of mental health for this population group.
