Abstract

This chapter looks at the disease from a scientific point of view and presents objective data that demystify various aspects of schizophrenia: its prevalence and the burden on individuals, families, and society; the brain mechanisms associated with symptoms such as hallucinations, delirium, and alterations in cognition; the mechanisms of action of medication; the environmental and genetic causes of the disease; the repercussions on the brain of the evolution of the disease (neuroprogression); and the possible ways to mitigate this evolution with neuroplasticity.
