Abstract
This chapter explores the national conversation on maternal health and the American cultural value of individualism that frequently underlies media presentations on this topic. Popular media tends to focus on mothers representing specific groups: employed mothers, minorities, adolescents, older age mothers, single, LGBTQ+, disabled, substance-abusing, or incarcerated mothers. Messages on autonomy, fitness for motherhood, and maternal health outcomes are subject to media misinformation and disinformation.
