Abstract
The need for artificial computation always existed in the history of our species. Here, the history of programming languages is pushed far into the past, much further than perhaps expected. This chapter explains the broader meaning of programming languages. It starts from the origin of life and continues by pointing out the natural development of technology that has led to the general purpose electronic computers of today.
