Textbook of Emergency General Surgery

Abstract

Small bowel perforation is a surgical emergency that almost always requires operative management. The aetiology of small bowel perforation is multifactorial, and the prevalence of the various causes is different around the world. The key principles of preoperative optimization, sound preoperative planning, adequate source control, appropriate surgical technique and careful postoperative management of potential complications apply to small bowel perforation, as to every intra-abdominal infection. This chapter will focus on pathologies not covered on other chapters of this textbook, as well as principles of good surgical practice, which can improve outcomes in these patients who present with peritonitis.
