Abstract
This introductory chapter provides readers with the opportunity to have more cognizance of some key issues related to the area of ocular disease and sight loss and the value of meeting psychosocial needs within a holistic caring framework and as part of a multidisciplinary team approach. An outline of the chapters is given to serve as an overview of the specific topics under discussion in this book.
First, some background information is presented, which highlights current global statistics related to blindness and visual impairment. In addition, the role and importance of the eyes as sensory organs are described, and some of the physical and psychosocial implications of losing sight are outlined.
