Abstract
Methods of management of diabetes mellitus comprise a wide spectrum ranging from diet and exercise and drugs to transplantation of beta cells as an organ or cellular preparations. This overview compares the two major forms of diabetes, type 1 diabetes (T1D) and type 2 diabetes (T2D), and briefly discusses approaches to treatment as a broad format with references to standard textbooks of endocrinology for more specific information. The main purpose is to provide transplant surgeons with a sense of what is currently considered the appropriate therapeutic point to intervene with pancreas and islet transplantation for the treatment of diabetes.
