Abstract

The problematic use and adequate implementation of evidence-based interventions and practices in schools are well documented. This chapter focuses on optimizing the implementation of evidence-based interventions and practices that address mental health and social, emotional, and behavioral concerns in school settings using motivational interviewing (MI). In this chapter, we define motivational interviewing and discuss its relevance to implementation science, highlight efforts that brought MI into education settings, and describe the underlying MI mechanisms and the empirical evidence related to MI implementation in education settings. We conclude by highlighting several aspects of MI practice and research that are important to consider as educators and including (a) teaching and learning MI, (b) measuring MI fidelity, and (c) evaluating MI mechanisms of change.
