Handbook of Applied Behavior Analysis

Abstract

Behavior analysis has long been used to improve the quality of life of people with intellectual disabilities (IDD); some of the first examples of applied behavior analysis were conducted with people with IDD. As there has been a shift from custodial care to meaningful quality of life and from institutionalization to community integration, the goals of behavior change programs and the methods used have been adapted to be kinder and more focused on well-being. We discuss how the current behavioral literature allows clinicians and researchers to conduct work that aligns with the 2006 UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Despite significant improvements in behavior-analytic programs for people with IDD, there remains room for improvement with regard to ensuring people with IDD have access to the full range of life experiences.
