Abstract

Cyclic vomiting syndrome (CVS) and marijuana-induced hyperemesis referred to as cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS) are characterized by recurrent episodes of nausea and vomiting. This chapter addresses salient features of CVS, CHS, and abnormalities in gastric emptying/dumping syndrome. CHS is thought to be a subset of CVS and is related to chronic cannabis use concurrent with increased legalization of cannabis use. We discuss the role of cannabinoids in hyperemesis and highlight problems with high-potency cannabis products. The management of CVS and CHS is reviewed based on recent guidelines by the American Neurogastroenterology and Motility Society (ANMS) and the Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome Association (CVSA). Abnormalities in gastric emptying in CVS and CHS are also discussed and are likely epiphenomenon without any correlation with symptoms. There are significant gaps in knowledge about these disorders, which warrant further research to better understand the pathophysiology of these disorders.
