The AFS Textbook of Foregut Disease

Abstract

Patients with gastric neuromuscular disorders can present with a multitude of symptoms including nausea, vomiting, bloating, early satiety/postprandial fullness, and/or abdominal pain. These symptoms are often disruptive to daily life and can result in diminished quality of life. Care of this patient population is frequently challenging, partially influenced by a complex underlying pathophysiology. In this chapter, we review the epidemiology, symptom profile, and the pathophysiology of patients with gastric neuromuscular disorders. Additionally, we discuss how knowledge of the pathophysiology can guide future treatment decisions of this patient population.
