Abstract

This chapter describes a number of medical conditions that involve morphological and physiological changes in a number of organ systems, leading to neurological symptoms (predominantly headaches), gastrointestinal difficulties, asthma as well as atopic dermatitis. These conditions are seen quite frequently in pediatric clinics and those of the corresponding subspecialists. The progression and clinical manifestations of these medical conditions are highly related to emotional states. This involves not only the adherence to treatment and the special precautions or measures that have to be taken (for instance, dietary, maintaining the skin hydrated, and maintaining a regular schedule). The emotional factors such as anxiety, tension, anger, and fear are involved in the flare-ups or exacerbations of all these conditions. This is due to the close interrelationship between neurophysiological states and the physiology of the gut, the physiopathology of headaches, inflammatory processes, and the other medical conditions discussed. We suggest a set of interventions involving emotional regulation, coping with stress, diminishing triggering factors and family stressors, school pressures, and other life conditions that are involved in the periods of exacerbation.
