Telemedicine for the Musculoskeletal Physical Exam

Abstract

This chapter is a practical and user-friendly guide that summarizes how to approach a telemedicine visit for patients who present with lumbar spine pain. Using expert experience, we detail the proper camera position for optimal patient visualization, how to guide the patient through the exam, and instructions for conducting modified special tests. We acknowledge the limitations with certain aspects of conducting the lumbar spine physical exam via telemedicine and discuss maneuvers that can be performed with or without adaptations. As the world of medicine expands into telemedicine, this chapter will help guide practitioners in any specialty to perform a thorough lumbar musculoskeletal exam using a telehealth platform.
