Abstract
Art is intrinsic to civilization. Speaking and singing are ancient art forms. This art includes not only speech and a singing performance, but also everyday speech and communication which are essential for transmission of ideas, and evolution of society. Previous chapters have reviewed how cultural and societal influences can result in voice disorders. This chapter provides additional basic information on speaking and singing as art forms, including analyses of their components, and of mechanisms of impairment. This chapter also includes a brief section on the importance of studying voice and the arts for physicians (and other healthcare providers). The more physicians understand about the arts in general, the more expert they become at diagnosing and treating voice impairment, and related dysfunctions in other areas of arts medicine.
