Imaging in Neonates

Abstract

Ultrasound is a mainstay in the diagnostic imaging of the musculoskeletal system in newborns and infants. This chapter focuses on diagnosing hip disorders, particularly developmental dysplasia of the hip in newborns and infants. This is a well-known and familiar challenge for neonatologists as well as paediatricians and paediatric radiologists or paediatric orthopaedics. The chapter gives a brief overview of different approaches and methods of how to assess the neonatal hip—also discussing the different techniques described in the European and the Anglo-American literature. All the respective scanning techniques and findings are described and illustrated in this chapter, with a focus on the Graf method. Additionally, some of the most important disorders of the hip joint in infancy and early childhood are reviewed.
