Abstract

Substance-related and addictive disorders are maladaptive patterns of substance use or behavior characterized by loss of control, compulsivity, and harmful consequences. While these disorders have common core symptoms, there are wide-ranging features influenced by the environment, addictive behavior, and intrinsic characteristics of the person at hand. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), on an annual global basis, approximately 275 million people use intoxicating substances (5.6% of the population), 31 million people have a substance-use disorder, and 450,000 die as a result of their substance use. Research over the last several decades has demonstrated that substance-related disorders result from a complex interplay of neurobiology, psychology, and social factors. This chapter reviews the epidemiology, etiology, pathophysiology, phenomenology, and treatment of substance-related and addictive disorders.
