Abstract

Pediatric knee pain can be divided into several subcategories including life-threatening conditions, inflammatory conditions, traumatic injuries, and congenital abnormalities. The presentation of pediatric knee pain can often be variable, however, an extensive history of the presentation can be extremely helpful in determining the diagnosis. The components of presentation can be divided into systemic and localized symptoms. Systemic symptoms can clue the provider into whether the diagnosis is from an acute condition, such as an infection, or chronic condition, such as malignancy or rheumatologic condition. Localized symptoms can be present on different aspects of the knee which can further reveal the specific location of injury within the knee. This can then dictate diagnostic steps to help determine the specific pathology including laboratory studies and imaging. This will dictate treatment as well as rehabilitation to return to daily life activities (Wolf, Pediatr Rev 37:18–23, 2016).
