Abstract
Rashes are common and diagnostically challenging conditions encountered in all healthcare settings. It is important to understand the characteristics of rashes that allow proper differential diagnosis, workup, and management. Of utmost importance is quickly recognizing life-threatening conditions so that prompt treatment can be initiated. An effective approach to diagnosing rashes is to categorize the rash based on its reaction pattern, which creates an accurate and broad differential diagnosis. Further testing, including skin biopsies, may be warranted in certain cases, and referral to a dermatologist may be needed for complicated dermatologic conditions or recalcitrant cases.
