Essentials of Cerebellum and Cerebellar Disorders

Abstract

Immune-mediated ataxias are likely to account for a large number of progressive ataxias. Advances in the field of immune-mediated ataxias meant that a number of novel antibodies directly linked to the pathogenesis of ataxia can now be used to diagnose immune ataxias. Primary Autoimmune Cerebellar Ataxia (PACA), however, refers to those ataxias that are suspected as being autoimmune but lack any specific well-characterized pathogenic antibody markers. The recent publication of proposed diagnostic criteria for PACA means that there are now better ways of suspecting and diagnosing PACA. This is important because immune-mediated ataxias are potentially treatable. Early diagnosis and treatment result in better outcomes and less disability.
