Abstract

As women will spend approximately three-quarters of their reproductive lifespan avoiding pregnancy, contraception and contraceptive counseling are some of the most important clinical services offered by sexual and reproductive health-care providers. A woman’s long-term goals, personal beliefs, reproductive experience, and medical history can collectively influence her decision to use contraception, as well as her choice of contraceptive method. Given the range of options available to women currently, providing guidance to help tailor a method of contraception to a woman’s needs and preferences is important. This chapter provides guidance on general contraceptive counseling principles, while also providing method-specific guidance.
