Abstract

An overview of the rapidly changing demographics, particularly in developed countries, provides a perspective on the need and urgency of investing more time and energy into geriatrics in general and in head and neck disease in particular. It is widely recognized that the geriatric age group is the fastest growing segment of our society. It is not surprising to note that the most rapid increase in the 65 years and older population had occurred in developing countries, in fact the number of older persons has tripled over the past 50 years, and it is projected that it will more than triple it again over the next 50 years. Also the numbers of the “oldest old,” referring to those aged >80 years, are increasing more rapidly than the number of older persons overall.

In this chapter we describe the clinical and radiological characteristics of some of the most frequent pathologies in the geriatric age that affect the head and neck.

In particular, we describe the ear pathologies such as chronic simple and cholesteatomatous otitis and the respective complications, malignant (necrotizing) otitis externa, and auditory pathologies that affect the elderly very frequently and that are associated with cognitive deficits with frequent repercussions in social life. As regards the pathologies of the nose, we describe the inverted papilloma, chronic dacryocystitis, and chronic rhinosinusitis.

Traumas are very common in the geriatric age favored by the patients’ balance difficulties and bone fragility. In the same way, some tumors such as those of the skin and parotid can present themselves in the geriatric age, posing various diagnostic and therapeutic problems.
