Abstract

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), an evidence-based behavioral therapy, treats individuals with emotion dysregulation and problematic behaviors, including suicide and self-harm. DBT has four components: individual therapy, group therapy, on-call skills coaching, and a consultation team for clinicians. The adolescent DBT skills combine acceptance and behavioral strategies and fall under five modules: emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, mindfulness, distress tolerance, and walking the middle path. The McLean Hospital 3East Dialectic Behavior Therapy Partial Hospital Program (DBT PHP) is a four-week program where participants learn the skills covered in the five DBT modules in a group therapy format. Program participants also receive twice weekly individual therapy, once weekly psychiatric consultation, and a once weekly family session. Family sessions focus on enhancing effective communication within the family and teaching validation skills to parents. Participants also have access to 24/7 skills coaching to help generalize skills use.
