Complications in Kidney Transplantation

Abstract

Kidney transplantation is the preferred treatment modality for end-stage kidney disease in appropriate candidates. Overall graft survival has improved over the years due to advancements in immunosuppressive medication regimens leading to an increase in the number of transplants. Surgical intervention, however, is not without complications. Urologic complications occur most frequently, including urine leak, ureteral stricture/stenosis, and obstruction. Hydronephrosis of the transplanted kidney can occur as a result of ureteral strictures or any obstruction along the urinary tract. Conservative management with decompression remains the first-line treatment for hydronephrosis. We present a case of hydronephrosis secondary to ureteral stenosis successfully treated with minimally invasive interventions.
