Abstract

Solid organ transplant recipients (SOTR) are a population at high risk for cutaneous adverse events. Infections are an important cause of morbidity and mortality among this group. Viral and fungal diseases including cutaneous manifestations are far more common than bacterial ones. Moreover, viral skin infections are the most frequent complications which decrease the quality of life in patients after transplantation.

This chapter outlines the importance of quick recognition, and suitable treatment, of cutaneous viral infections among this group. Emphasis will be put on epidemiology, histopathology, clinical manifestation, and the treatment of the most frequent viral diseases. Moreover, we have tried to distinguish the characteristic cutaneous features of these infections among the SOTR population. On the one hand, we describe diseases which result from reactivation of a previous infection, like the varicella-zoster virus (VZV) and cytomegalovirus (CMV) and other frequent infections such as human papilloma virus (HPV), herpes simplex virus (HSV), molluscum contagiosum (MC), trichodysplasia spinulosa (TS), and acquired epidermodysplasia verruciformis (EDV).
