Abstract

Fractures are common in children. Fractures may occur before, during and after birth. Fractures due to birth trauma occur infrequently and mostly are fractures of the clavicle. An overview of fractures due to birth trauma is given in this chapter. Accidental fractures due to trauma after birth are common with approximately one-third of children sustaining a fracture before the age of 17 years. In a large Swedish study, the overall annual incidence of fractures in children was 2.1% (2.6 for boys; 1.7 for girls). In this chapter, the different accidental trauma scenarios (short and long distance falls, medical procedures and sporting activities) are discussed and illustrated with examples.
