Abstract
The ankle block is a technique that can provide both anaesthesia and postoperative analgesia for foot and ankle surgery as well as analgesia for some foot related injuries. Its primary advantage over other lower-limb blocks is that it is associated with minimal motor block. Traditionally the anatomic landmark-guided technique was associated with high success rates. Recent evidence, however suggests, that the ultrasound-guided technique of ankle block improves clinical efficacy, particularly in the hands of less-experienced practitioners (Chin et al., Reg Anesth Pain Med 36:611–8, 2011).
